Questions about lessons

How old does a child have to be to start?

Most children start between three and six, on a violin cut to their size. Older beginners are welcome too, and your teacher picks a first piece to match.

How long is a lesson?

Private lessons for the youngest are 30 minutes, once a week. Older students move to 45 or 60 minutes. Group classes run 45 to 60 minutes. Your teacher suggests a length at your first visit.

Do we need our own violin?

You need a violin at home to practice. Strings come in small sizes, and a child outgrows each one. Ask your teacher before you buy, and ask us about renting.

Does a parent have to sit in?

For young children, yes. A parent stays in the room for every lesson and practices with the child at home. Parents of older students are welcome to stay.

How are teachers matched?

We watch a lesson with you at the first visit, listen to what your child likes and suggest a teacher and a weekly time. You can ask for another teacher at any time.

What is a first visit?

A short visit for you and your child. You watch a lesson, a teacher talks with you about the approach, and your child may hold a violin. Nobody is tested.

What is the group class?

A weekly class with up to 8 children at the same stage, playing the pieces they already know, together. It sits beside the private lesson and does not replace it.

Do students have to play in the recitals?

No. Each child chooses, and many come first to listen. A piece can be played alone or with the group.

What if we miss a lesson?

A lesson you cancel with a day's notice is made up within the session.

Can an adult start?

Yes, on violin or viola. Tell us when you book your visit, and we find a teacher and a time that suit you.

How does tuition work?

The length of the lesson, the format and the teacher set it. We give you our figures in writing at your first visit.
